Mohawks Reassemble Over 1784 Land Claim in Mohawk Valley
Chief Standing Arrow convened Mohawk and Six Nations Elders along the Schoharie to press a claim to a 60 mile wide strip from Albany to Buffalo. The group cites a 1784 treaty and a 1780 New York agreement offering 700 pounds in exchange for land, arguing the state could not rightfully transfer it. Locals fear the dispute could affect valuable Mohawk lands and regional stability.
