Runaway Truck Tire Kills Girl in Union New Jersey
A 1000 pound tire and rim broke loose from a tractor-trailer in Union killing 13 year old Nancy Balint and injuring no one else. The wheel jumped a curb and struck her from behind as she and her 15 year old sister Joann walked home from a shopping trip. Nancy died en route to Union Memorial General Hospital. The truck driven by Carl Sheriff, 26, of Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania, was not speeding beyond 25 mph. The restraining chain on a spare tire rack snapped causing the wheel to detach. The sisters were returning home from Union Center. Nancy Balint is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Balint and two brothers. Nancy’s father is a Honeywell sales engineer in Union.
