Nice Funeral for Homeless Italian Man in Madison County Jail
In Anderson Indiana Sheriff Joe L. Brogdon issued a plea for donations to fund a “nice funeral” for Mike Bertinetto, a 72 year old Italian immigrant who lived for 40 years in Madison County jail due to lack of a home. Bertinetto, who spoke seven languages, died of a heart attack and left no known relatives. He had come to the United States from Milan as an interpreter and worked for railroads and for American Steel and Wire Co. A 1910 mill accident caused memory loss that left him unable to work or enter public institutions. The jail provided care and meals for years, a tradition continued by subsequent sheriffs.
