Oklahoma Sooners hold the top national ranking in the AP preseason poll with 54 first place votes and 1,184 points. Coach Barry Switzer questions the rating, saying the team is not yet ready while Alabama and Michigan trail in the top five. The poll also notes USC, Penn State, Nebraska, and other programs in the top 10 with a second tier list following. The Sooners face restrictions from last season’s TV ban but begin the season aiming to prove the rating correct.
