Pennsylvania Bureau of Traffic Safety released figures showing Erie County’s 1968 traffic accidents totaled 6,987 with 50 fatal, 2,307 non fatal and 4,630 property damage cases. Costs reached $15,040,000 locally and $582,599,000 statewide, as deaths dropped to 57 nationwide rose.
In Pittsburgh negotiations on black demands for open entry into construction crafts enter a second day. Judge David Olburn said ground rules were virtually agreed upon after five hours of talks. The Black Construction Coalition urged progress toward black workers on jobs as protests and closures last week highlighted civil rights tensions.
Senate Republican Leader Everett M. Dirksen 73 is in satisfactory condition after surgeons removed the upper lobe of his right lung at Walter Reed Hospital. Aide said there was no immediate report on whether the tumor was cancerous, but the Dirksen office statement noted no evidence of spread and praised his recuperative powers and work capacity.
Erie County Treasurer Neil McLaughlin won a two month feud with the county commissioners over a special depository for hospital funds in Fairview. Terms of settlement require deposits twice monthly from the hospital administrator and allow only the treasurer to withdraw from the account at the Fairview branch. The controversy cost about 300 dollars to taxpayers as about 100000 dollars sat in the depository unseen.
