Escapee Sought in 1945 Hess Slaying Mystery
JERICHO, Sept. 3. An escapee from Lima State Hospital for the criminally insane is held in Erie on strong suspicion of the March 16 murder of County Detective John Coates. The 43 year old, who escaped in fall 1944 after a french knife was stolen from the hospital kitchen, was reported in Erie after the escape. Hess, a transient railroad camp cook, was found slashed to death near 16th and Division. A french knife was found at the scene.
