Washington AP House members voted 425 to 7 to reject automatic pay raises for themselves and top officials, sending the measure to the Senate after Labor Day recess. The bill would raise lawmakers’ salaries from 44 600 to about 57 10 annually if enacted, while the Senate would decide.
In Washington this week Representative Joseph P. Vigorito urged House Public Works subcommittee passage of HR 9468 to boost law enforcement at Army Corps of Engineers water projects. The proposal would let the Corps contract with local governments to tap federal funds during peak usage at facilities including Shenango Lake Woodenck Lake and Union City Dam in the 24th District.
A 36 foot river boat with 22 Vietnamese refugees including nine children was rescued by the offshore oil service boat Lady Cynthia about 150 miles northeast of Singapore in the South China Sea. The group fled Vietnam August 20 and will be processed in Brisbane this weekend as new migrants.
