Treasury spending tax plan aims to curb inflation
Washington Sept 1 treasury representatives outlined a revolutionary proposal to tax money taxpayers spend to curb inflation. The plan would levy a graduated tax on personal expenditures not covered by income tax exemptions and credits, aiming to push up savings. Senator Vandenberg questioned its desirability, while Randolph Paul urged high income taxes with a spending tax to fill the gap. House committee chair George estimated annual yield at four to five billion dollars, but the plan could not apply to corporations and faced war-effort concerns.
