Shannon in serious condition after relapse
General Edward C. Shannon Republican nominee for lieutenant governor is in very serious condition with blood poisoning after a relapse. Doctors reported his temperature and strength wavering as he battles infection from a razor-scratch entry and the World War veteran commander received constant care through the night.

Old Landmark Near Spartan Razed by Fire
A wooden octagonal barn on the W. W. Batts farm, about a mile and a half north of Spartanburg, was destroyed by fire last night between 10 and 11 o clock. The fire gutted the structure and its contents, with the Batts brothers discovering the blaze. The cause is undetermined though faulty wiring is suspected. The barn, a distinctive five-sided building erected by the Obe Clark farm, was once a notable local landmark valued at eight to nine thousand dollars forty years ago. Insurance details were not available. Nearby, another barn and the farm hose escaped the flames across the road.
