In a 336 to 4 House vote Britain backs joining the European Common Market, with entry anticipated about 14 months later after other nations’ approval and domestic legislation. The move trims American tariff exposure, expands European markets for U S firms, and strengthens Europe’s bargaining power in global trade.
Judge Edward Carney ruled that Charles J. Elchynski must appear on the Erie County ballot for the Corry Area School District race after an error left his name off. The decision does not automatically place him on ballots in Warren and Crawford counties where printed ballots lack his name.
Harrisburg AP Defense lawyers for Rev. Philip Berrigan and seven others charged with plotting against the government seek jurors aged 18 to 20 before trial. They argue the under-21 group can identify with the war movement while noting federal law currently excludes 18 to 29 year olds from juries. The request comes as judges weigh procedures amid questions on trial speed and eligibility.
James Swan twenty two of Center street Union City bound over for manslaughter after three hours of testimony at a hearing before District Justice Porter Auer. Swan allegedly beat a two year old child who died two days after admission to Union City Memorial Hospital. He remains jailed awaiting trial after bond was revoked for witness intimidation of the victim’s mother Evelyn Wynkoop. The case involves autopsy findings and testimony from hospital and state police witnesses.
The Senate advanced a 3.2 billion foreign aid package while rejecting an end the war proposal and maintaining Cambodia spending limits. Roll call votes stretched into the night as Henry Kissinger warned of a possible presidential veto if Cambodia restrictions and an antiwar provision remained.
A year-old desecration case in Pine Grove Cemetery against Lewis Bielak and four others was dismissed for lack of evidence. One co-defendant could not be located, so the Erie County court did not press the case. About $400 in damages were alleged in the incident.
Corry officials report a sharp drop in earned income tax receipts. At a YMCA meeting the Corry Area Fine Arts Committee was revived to stage a series of cultural events led by John Rossbacher. The Erie Philharmonic Orchestra is slated for a pops concert in late February or early March, with federal funds assisting the act. The effort also involves Mayor Edward Zarger, Dennis Frushone, William Will, Mrs. George Gould, Mrs. Henry Walker, and William Eaton amid ongoing fundraising and patron ticket sales.
