A unit of 350 to 400 men from eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas began duty yesterday at 9 am. The 24th audh outfits nationwide join the call to duty amid base preparations and extensive vehicle movement and cable line construction to control areas. Tulsa and Oklahoma City units were released after last year’s Berlin crisis.
President Kennedy creates a three man coordinating committee to handle negotiations on Cuban missile bases and related issues. John J. McCloy chairs with George W. Ball and Roswell Gilpatric. they report to the President and work with Rusk McNamara and Stevenson. The panel focuses on implementing Kennedy Khrushchev letters and coordinating with U Thant and Khrushchev's pledge to dismantle Soviet bases in Cuba.
UN acting Secretary General U Thant plans more talks with Soviet and U S officials and a trip to Cuba to push a Soviet American deal on the Cuban crisis. He will meet Kuznetsov and Stevenson and then fly to Havana to arrange UN supervision of missile withdrawals.
A family spokesman said Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt remains seriously ill and not responding to treatment as hoped. The former First Lady, age 60s, has anemia and a fungal infection under medical care and the outlook for the future is uncertain.

Erie County residents flocked to 30 vaccination sites including Corry Area High School for the Sabin Oral vaccine drive. Across the county 114 081 people visited stations from noon to 6 pm, with 3 066 at the Corry distribution and 2 841 on the second day in other areas. On opening day of small game season in Erie County seven hunters were wounded or killed. Townley 18 suffered critical back wounds and possible spinal injury after a 10 gauge shotgun blast on his father's property. Donald Porterfield 45 was shot in the face near Nield, died Sunday after surgery. Other victims include two Waterford youths with leg wounds and James Filler 14 hurt by a brother while pheasant hunting. Authorities continue the investigation as residents seek updates.
US reconnaissance planes focus on Cuba seeking signs that Soviet missile bases there are being dismantled. The quarantine fleet remains on guard in the Atlantic with no Soviet ships reported within days. Officials say no major reductions in military prep are expected until missile threat is removed. In a snowbound crash on Armenia Mountain near Troy two Williamsport men died. Donald S King, 31, and Robert Reeger, 85, were killed when their light plane crashed Friday night. Hunters found the wreckage Saturday. Reeger identified by a license plate remains. Gerald Vickery planned to contact King’s dentist to confirm identity.
Officials fear the death toll from last week's Hurricane Harriet could rise to nearly 1000 in flood damaged southern Thailand. Bleeding bodies have been reported recovered and hundreds more are believed washed out to sea. As many as 40 000 homes were destroyed across three hard hit provinces.
