The Polish government released Cardinal Wyszynski from house arrest in a move described as uniting the country. The church leader, 65, has retired to Warsaw and resumed church duties, though officials say he has not yet resumed full leadership. His 1953 confinement followed a crackdown on religious freedom under Premier Bierut.
