Ousted FHA official Clyde Powell sentenced to year in jail

Clyde Powell, former assistant federal housing commissioner, received a one year sentence for criminal contempt from U S District Judge F Dickinson Letts. Powell refused to answer grand jury questions about bribery and misconduct in the Federal Housing Administration. He had headed a multimillion dollar mortgage program and was dismissed at the start of the housing scandal probe.

Churchill completes 30 years in Commons

London Prime Minister Churchill completes six consecutive years as a member of the House of Commons, total 52 years in the lower house, first elected in 1900 except for 1922-24, marking a record tenure among present members. Two-car crash near Van Wert Ohio kills John Bopinks 35, and injuries others. victims transported to Van Wert County Hospital.

Aero Supply Mig. hosts first plant tour for 43 guests

Forty three guests from nine Eastern aircraft and allied firms took part in the Aero Supply Mig. Go Inc first plant program at the local Erie plant. E F Pain said 28 customers, 12 agents, and three reps from Business Week and Purchasing were present. The group flew in on two chartered planes, toured the Fourth Ward plant, and learned about Aero designs and future production plans. A fillet mignon dinner at the Hotel Corry followed with music by Mascaro and Toth. The party returned to New York City via Erie Airport.

Slow Building Pace Frustrates Corry High School Officials

Corry Area Schools Authority leaders voiced frustration over slow progress on the $2,385,000 Corry Area High School. Supt Lawrence Douglas said the contractor remains far from finished despite promises to be out by November 1. The issue includes buck passing among parties, no penalties in the contract, and delays pushing some outside work to next spring. Walter Deutschlander was named chairman with Robert Ott Sm as vice chairman, Dallas Smiley secretary-treasurer, and George Orcutt assistant secretary-treasurer. Attendance was five of nine directors.

Pittsburgh mother charged with teaching teens to steal

Mrs born sev tifratt, a 30 year old Pittsburgh mother of two, faced grand jury action on charges she taught two teenage girls to steal. Patrolman Lynch quoted the two girls, a 19 year old and another, saying she instructed them to become shop lifters. The girls admitted turning over loot to the woman, who was held for court on charges of receiving stolen goods, burglary, and contributing to delinquency of minors.

Mother Sues Over Daughter's Death On Route 6

Lena B Rodgers of Union City filed a wrongful death suit at the Erie County Courthouse seeking unspecified damages for the 16 year old daughter Betty Jean Watt Rodgers who was struck and killed August 23 along Route 6. PA Truck Inspection Period Ends Saturday
