Charles Van Doren and Hank Bloomgarden, top money winners on the NBC show Twenty-One, revised their statements about the program. They appeared separately at District Attorney Frank Hogan's office. changes described as substantial. Hogan noted possible perjury questions but no immediate action.
Supt William Rodemeyer announced an evening program at Corry Avenue High School to organize sewing and typing classes. Albany NY AP A major police action against upstate gambling operations netted 142 arrests in more than 25 cities and villages. Troopers seized thousands of dollars as authorities said the crackdown broke the back of a regional syndicate linked to bookmaking and lottery fronts.
Pittsburgh AP report says steel industry negotiators and United Steelworkers resumed bargaining late today under orders for a speedy settlement of the 102 day nationwide strike. Government injunctions and a pending union appeal add pressure as both sides weigh new offers while a court ruling looms early next week. The session marks the first since talks collapsed in Washington and Secretary Mitchell urged nonstop negotiations. USW continued on page two.
Vermont and New York police joined a large search for Rodney Austin, a 44-year-old Maine ex convict sought for kidnapping and raping a 14 year old babysitter. Austin fled after a wrecked car was found near the Vermont line. Sharon Simmons, the victim, was freed and returned to Damariscotta Maine.
Sixty four CAHS students, a junior and senior class, took two hour preliminary scholastic aptitude tests this morning. Guidance counselor Roger Hoover said the tests serve as a warm up for college boards tests and aid in scholarship determinations. Seniors use them to qualify for scholarships, while juniors use them as orientation for future pre scholarship tests. The College Entrance Examination Board offers the tests to provide a low cost option for guiding college bound students.
Seventh graders Ann Hanson wins 5 dollars in first prize with Connie Hammond taking 8 dollars for second. Brian Pantle shares 2 dollars with Charles Van Winkle, who was absent. Ninth grade boys organized the entry and will attend a breakfast at Hotel Corry before posters go into Corry Jamestown window on North Center Street.
Four injured and about 3525 dollars in property damage from a string of crashes on Corry area highways during a rainy night. Joseph Schumacher, 21, of Pittsburgh, failed to negotiate a curve near Waittsburg. his car struck a northbound vehicle driven by Salvatore Campanella of Syracuse. Schumacher was hospitalized with injuries, Campanella uninjured. A second crash near the fish hatchery involved Robert Taylor, 18, and passenger Raymond Courtney, both hospitalized with multiple injuries. A third crash linked Charles Ayers, 20, and Walter Stutzman, 22, with Stutzman injured. Charges pending.
The Flywheel reports four Ajax Tron Works personnel changes. A new position focuses on investigating and developing new manufacturing techniques to stay ahead of tech progress and keep prices competitive. Phil Sample becomes assistant work manager overseeing machine shop and related operations. Thomas Pievathi, with eight years on the engineering staff, is promoted to assistant chief engineer. Robert Brown, with Ajax since 1948, is named foreman of the maintenance department.
Art Metal Construction Companys Jamestown division has raised its workforce to 345 after recalling workers previously laid off during a three month IAM strike. About 250 were recalled last month, with 15 more planned next week and 12 to 18 more per week thereafter. Production resumes at some plants as union members meet to discuss matters.
The city plans to remove the old Cory High School on West South Street for commercial use. Elwood Heaster had owned the building and planned a nursing home but later put it up for sale at 15100. The planning commission chairman Anderson announced a November 10 meeting to discuss financing and possible real estate development firms.
Negro leaders say they will boycott a Democratic harmony dinner in a move toward segregation free seating. They met with Tiller sponsors and agreed to name 25 additional invitees while Harold Sinks of the DNC confirmed segregated tables for attendees. McClinton of the Arkansas Democratic Voters Association declined to attend and disclosed details of the outreach.
Six Corry Area High School juniors entered a long wait as candidates for Corry’s American Field Service ambassador. From 16 applicants, six were chosen for the chance to go to Europe next summer. Final selection rests with American Field Service headquarters in New York. The six named are Michael Anderson, Donald Wharton, James Williams, Sandra Snodgrass, Catherine Tite, and Hartson Cole. Readiness grows as they complete forms, themes, and materials due by November.

Mrs. Sara Pees about 73 of Murraysville died yesterday when her car collided head on with another on Route 23 about 15 miles south of Latrobe. Her husband Boyde Pees was driving. neither other driver nor survivor injured.
