A 15 year old youth escaped from a jail cell in Bedford after plumbing work halted jailer Charles Bingham by a phone call. Watsel J. Poore of Bakersville, North Carolina, who reported the repair delay, accompanied the jailer to the office and then left with Poore claiming he would return to his cell. Poore had been arrested on two auto theft charges and one wallet theft, allegedly driving a stolen vehicle from Asheville to Bedford before taking another car. Roadblocks and a police radio alert were issued to locate him.
