Kenya authorities raid Mau Mau roundup arrests
Kenyan authorities detained at least 86 natives in a roundup of suspected Mau Mau members. Jomo Kenyatta, president of the Kenya African Union, was among those reported. Hiss Eligible for Parole Soon
Alger Hiss, serving a five year term for perjury in a Pennsylvania federal prison, becomes parole eligible one month from November 21 but has not filed for parole. The U S Parole Board says no application or hearing is planned before the November 4 election. The board will visit Lewisburg the week of November 10 to hear applicants, including Hiss if he applies. The incident features in political talk linking Eisenhower and Stevenson to Hiss, who was convicted in 1950 of lying about State Department secrets.

Mrs. Carl W. VanTassel Died in St Vincent’s Hospital
Relatives learned today of the death of Mrs. Carl W. VanTassel at St Vincent’s Hospital after long illness. Survived by her husband and a son Carl Jr. The VanTassels lived in Union City where Mr. VanTassel ran a mortuary firm, later moved to Erie where he worked in the service station and oil distribution business. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
