Pennsylvania Railroad reported net income of 19.44 million dollars for the eight months ended August, equal to 1.44 dollars a share, compared with 12.27 million or 1.0 dollars a share for the same period in 1985.
Cor Nell D. Beall, president of council and aging mayor since McNair’s resignation in October, was elected mayor today at a council electoral convention. He will serve out McNair’s term through December 41, 1937, in a calm transition after earlier confusion and security at the council chamber.
Weekend patrols led to numerous arrests for state motor code violations including reckless driving and speeding in the district. Several minor accidents occurred with no serious injuries. Brandy Camp man Arthur Faulkner, 40, is jailed awaiting outcome of gunshot wounds to 13 year old Wayne Fields after Faulkner allegedly fired a shotgun through the Wields home and shot at a car. Police say the incident followed a party argument with Wayne’s father Horace.
An unidentified man was critically injured after stumbling into Route 322 near Kerrtown Meadville last evening. A Salvation Army party returning from Pittburgh's Young Peoples Council witnessed the accident and described the man as unconscious at Meadville hospital. The vehicle was driven by Harold Kennit zer, 16, Conneaut Lake.

Washington October 19 The Supreme Court was urged to add a test of the new social security act to its term program by Milward McLennen Boston attorney who sought to intervene as a friend in three pending New York unemployment insurance cases He was given permission to file a motion to consider the federal act The court meanwhile rejected pleas to review suits attacking two New Deal laws including the truth in securities act and a challenge by Alabama Power Co and Texas Utilities Co to the PWA power loan and grant program The move came at the close of a meeting with McLennen and others asking to file on behalf of Vermont residents in the three New York matters
Ex Governor Gilford Pinchot will address a 6 30 p m gathering in City Park Beaverdam Cynes day evening as part of a Republican caravan. Sam Irvine, chair of the Republican committee, announced the brief program may be moved to London duly Rooms if weather turns unfavorable. Pinchot has spoken locally several times in recent years.
In Mercer Pennsylvania an automobile accident near here killed Sara Jane Riethmiller 21 of Wesleyville and left Elizabeth Mellig 18 of Mercer injured. The car was driven by John Ta Reno 47 of Greenville.
London 19. King Edward the Eighth rejects a plan to gag British newspapers ahead of Mrs. Ernest Simpson's divorce court proceedings at Ipswich. A Buckingham Palace source says the king opposes urging editors to ignore or soften coverage, upholding his stance that his friendship with Mrs. Simpson is private. Parliament members had considered voicing representations.
H R Ekin of the New York World Telegram and other papers arrived at Newark at 10 49 3 45 a m to complete a 25 402 mile around the world flight in less than 48 5 days a new world record for travel in ordinary commercial conveyances. Ekins defeated rivals Dorothy Heilenken and Leo Kiers on by about 10 000 miles and six days.
Property owners along the Sciota route north of Sciota church to the state line win quick action for road repairs. A WPA crew of about thirty men under B A Lyons began widening ditching and graveling the stretch from the church north to the state line and the nearby 116 or 4 road past the school. Petitions for the improvement were sent to the State Department of Highways with WEA cooperation. About 2.8 miles remain to be improved on the Wattsburg end toward Roosevelt Highway. Work will continue next week.
A light snow event left two inches on the ground between Greenfield and North West, with A. A. Eastman of Wattsburg noting a heavier fall between 3 and 4 a.m. Sunday. Local resident Hastman confirmed by showing a snowball as proof.
