Harlin Oct 11 A war bulletin says the fortified city of Obrenovac forty miles southeast of Bolgai has fallen to German forces. It reports further progress by Field Marshal von Mackensen and that heights beyond Belgrade have also fallen to German and Austrian troops. Several important Serbian villages have reportedly been captured as the advance continues toward Belgrade.
Brownsville October 19 Two Americans were killed and three wounded when a Mexican bandit gang wrecked a train near Lowly Arrowsville and Mexican routes. U.S. cavalry pursued the gang with no report of abet. Injured include Dr H S McCain and Harry Wallace. A U.S. soldier relayed news as troops moved to the Mexican danger zone.
A British steamer Allenpo of 3870 tons burden was sunk in the channel last night, likely by a German submarine. Copenhagen reports say a Sindair submarine torpedoed the Gerten steamer Pernambuco and the Baderham yesterday. Pernambuco sunk, fate of Baderham unclear. Admiralty later announced the Allenpo crew were saved.
Bethlehem Steel stock rose sharply in New York trading on October 18, hitting 500 and climbing to around 86 1/2 as investors reacted to wartime demand and market impulses. Other industrials also advanced in the morning session amid broad market strength.
In Pittsburgh on October 11 Judge Schaeffer issued a decision reversing the Republican primary result in Braddock’s First Ward. The judge voided the nomination for John, awarding it to his opponent by a large margin, with vote totals uncertain due to damaged records.
