President Ford and Jimmy Carter are easing their pace this week ahead of the final debate and election. Ford stays at the White House until Thursday night then goes to New York for the Al Smith dinner before a final talk with Carter in Williamsburg, Virginia. Carter rests at home after church and teaching Sunday school, plans stops in Florida North Carolina and New York, then returns to Plains for debate prep. Carter’s report lists Georgia gubernatorial contributors including Delta Air Lines Coca Cola and Cox Broadcasting funding.
In Pittsburgh, clinics reopened for swine flu shots after three elderly deaths. More than 17 000 vaccinated in Allegheny County, but elderly turnout lagged as senior clinics resumed. Frank Clack called 17,000 a good number though the general public turnout was about 20 percent of expectations.
Kenneth E. Smith, 39, of Ashville, escaped serious injury when his 1971 car struck a ConRail train near Bear Lake, spun off the tracks, and tumbled 15 feet into a creek. He was treated at Corry Memorial Hospital for facial lacerations and released, while the train crew reported no injuries.
Pennsylvania woke to the season’s first snow with about an inch in McKean and Potter counties. Traces were seen in several towns while Kane and Coudersport reported inch totals. Temperatures ranged in the low 20s, with Warren once recording 14 inches in October 1917.
Freezing temperatures over the weekend brought light snow to Corry while other Erie Warren and Crawford county areas faced slick interstates and heavy driving conditions. NWS noted flurries and pellets at Erie International Airport with salt trucks deployed on 1 90 and 1 7 corridors. One minor weather related accident reported no injuries.
U S tank production rises as Army recovers from a shortage and no longer objects to new tanks for Israel. Pentagon officials foresee next year’s M60 output meeting Army needs and foreign sales, amid reports of a 120 tank Israeli package approved by President Ford. The tank stock shortage stems from emergency Israeli shipments and a long-term drop to about 30 tanks monthly.
Haltom City police seek a gunman after a CB radios feud led to a rendezvous under a freeway where Don Blue Goose Hileber 36 died from gunshots and Howard Dirty Bird Collins was seriously wounded. A pistol was recovered at the scene.
Coast Guard holds out little hope of finding the Panamanian cargo ship Sylvia I I Ossa missing in the Bermuda Triangle after reporting heavy weather and forced speed reduction. A search resumed at dawn with oil slick, lifeboat, rope coil and OSSA signboard found near the last location. An Argentine vessel later recovered a lifeboat marked Sylvia 8 Panama as aircraft scoured 8,200 square miles.
Three Americans win the 1976 Nobel prizes in physics and chemistry. Burton Richter of Stanford and Samuel Ting of MIT share the physics award for pioneering work on a heavy elementary particle. William Lipscomb of Harvard wins the chemistry prize for studies on boranes and chemical bonding. Each prize carries 160000 dollars. formal presentation in Stockholm on December 10. The literature prize will be announced separately and no peace prize is awarded this year.
The Corty Redevelopment Authority will fund a 13600 concrete wall replacement at the Darndall Family Shoe Store building as part of downtown renewal. The wall repair stems from razing Hitz and Leed’s buildings for a parking area near North Center Street and rail tracks. Funding comes from the renewal project contingency with state and federal support, and future plans include painting Frye's Drugs north wall.
An Erie youth remains in satisfactory condition at Corry Memorial Hospital after a Saturday one car crash on East Main street. Driver Kirk E. Werner 18 and passengers Samuel Troup 18 and Robert Barbarini 16, all of Erie, were treated for contusions and abrasions. Werner faces reckless driving charges.
