Relief rolls of state show sharp decline in Oct week

The first week in October brought the sharpest weekly decline in Pennsylvania general assistance rolls since late May as relief load fell by 3,008 cases or 11,808 persons. Private employment gains drove most of the drop, with WPA turnover also contributing. Net private employment reduced the load by 1,903 cases, and since September private industry has absorbed 7,561 cases. WPA closings outweighed openings, aiding the decline, while about 600 cases moved to Aid to Dependent Children and aged assistance programs to leverage federal participation. Applications fell 24 percent to 8,014, with total expenditures down to $1,946,875. As of October 7, 269,058 cases served 815,506 persons nationwide in general assistance.
