Battleship New Jersey Nears North Viet Coast Target Island Blasted

The 56 000 ton USS New Jersey moved closer to Hon Mat island lies 14 miles south of the 19th parallel. Antiaircraft batteries on the island attacked U S bombers as the battleship fired 2700 pound shells for 30 minutes destroying part of the island and an anti aircraft position. B52 bombers dropped 3000 tons around four provincial capitals in South Vietnam amid heavy air and naval bombardment.

Flower Power Car Stolen Then Found By Troopers

State trooper Terence Haskins unknowingly drove a stolen red flower power Chevy station wagon decorated with flowers and a racing stripe. William Benson reported the car stolen at 7 am, then learned it was at the substation after Benson’s brother let Haskins borrow it briefly.

Corry School Board appoints Howard to fill vacancy

The Corry School Board unanimously named Jamies Howard of 55 East Frederick Street to fill the unexpired term of B G Bennett who resigned last month. Howard 28 is senior loan teller at Citizens Corry Office of the Marine Bank and a Corry native educated at local schools.

Apollo 7 crew performs space TV show despite colds

The Apollo 7 astronauts all with colds presented a live 11 minute tour of their spacecraft. Walter Schirra Donna Eisele and Walter Cunningham showcased the capsule interior and exercise gear while radioing jokes and signs to officials. A second show is planned for Wednesday as Apollo 7 passes within range of Corpus Christi and Merritt Island receiving stations. Harriet Eisele watched from mission control with her parents.

Inmates Shot After Refusing to Work at Cummins Prison Farm

Prison guards at Cummins Prison Farm Arkansas fired eight shotgun blasts into a group of about 75 inmates who refused to work. 24 were wounded, including Herman Goad of Natchez, Miss. Authorities say warning shots were fired first. guards defend the action as necessary. Gov. Rockefeller called for a full investigation.

UNION CITY The first concrete was placed in the sluice of the Union City flood control dam project yesterday by contractor S J Groves & Son John C Staples resident engineer announced Staples said the Corps of Army Engineers has set a final inspection of two roadways built for the state in connection with the dam project for too narrow at 1 p m The new roadway in Amity and Waterford townships Erie County are Routes 25048 and 5049 State officials are planning to tend the inspection tour Staples added

Corry Search Ends as Jim Keppel Is Found Safe

In Corry Pennsylvania a city wide search for 11 year old Jim Keppel ended when Sam Barbalaci and Mrs. Keppel found the boy in bushes near Grove Street after a YMCA swimming outing. The father thanked the responders and declared the town’s effort made him glad to live in Corry. Separately Chicago news: Leon Stolz, longtime Chicago Tribune editorial chief, died at 75 after 38 years at the paper.

County and Corps Move to Make Union City Dam a Recreation Pool

The Army Corps of Engineers proposes a permanent recreation reservoir at Union City dam in Erie and Crawford counties. Col Wagner Nichols says design changes require new authorization. Congressman Joseph Vigorito says talks with county commissioners will set cost participation and operation terms. He credits The Corry Evening Journal for shaping support and notes the mud flats would be avoided by the plan.
