New Coal Pact Being Studied By Wage Board
Washington AP reports the Wage Stabilization Board begins formal deliberations on the coal pact signed by John L Lewis and mine operators. About 10 Illinois mines with 5,000 UMW workers idle after protests over government approval delays. The pact boosts miners pay by over 10 percent from 16.95 a day, funds welfare gains, and raises employer contributions. Archibald Cox says decisions will be careful and retroactive to October.
