Marines Beat Back Viet Cong Assault Near Thuong Duc Camp
Near the Thuong Duc Green Beret camp in jungled foothills 27 miles southwest of Da Nang, U S Marines repelled a nocturnal assault by North Vietnamese troops within 100 yards of their lines. The enemy was said to suffer one dead in an early estimate of three to four hours of fighting, while eight Marines were killed and twenty wounded. The clash occurred as American forces struggled to respond to predawn attempts to seize the camp, aided by limited air cover and veteran artillery. Other operations across Saigon and the DMZ region reported 107 enemy dead in four clashes, with U S forces advancing on multiple fronts.
