French Creek Canal Promoted as Cheaper Ohio River Route

Col W E R Covell of the Pittsburgh district engineers told Allegheny River Improvement Association delegates that the Allegheny French Creek plan would need 34 locks and dams yet cost 27 million dollars less than the Beaver Mahoning route now approved. The Penn route would be 191 miles long at 152 million dollars, with 16 locks, while the Beaver Mahoning path spans 129 miles at higher property damages. Reisenman of Franklin vows to oppose the Beaver Mahoning plan citing riparian rights. Covell notes 1,800,000 tons more moved on Pittsburgh rivers in a year than through the Panama Canal.
