Gas Station Blast Damages Pennzoil Station on West Smith Street

Fevring 29 event caused an air storage tank to explode in the basement of the Pennzoil Station. The blast ripped through floors and ceilings, shattered windows, and caused extensive interior damage. Attendant outside, a visitor uninjured, manager Raymond McCoy assessing losses.

Air Fleet May Pass Over City Revealing Commonwealth Cruise

Harrisburg will host the first mass cruise of the state airways under the state Bureau of Aeronautics. More than 300 pilots and owners invited by William A. Hauptmann WIns First Skirmish In Lindbergh Case Hearing

In New York on October 11 United Press reports Bruno Hauptmann won the opening skirmish in his bid to fight extradition for the murder of Ute Lindbergh. A writ of habeas corpus hearing was postponed until Monday at the request of defense, against New Jersey officials. The hearing postponement delayed New Jersey’s plan to transfer Hauptmann to Flemington for murder arraignment.

Four Die as Milwaukee Train Plunges Off Iowa Bridge

RUTTENBERG Oct 11 Four persons were killed and three seriously hurt when a Milwaukee Railroad passenger train plunged from a small bridge two miles south of here. The deceased include engineer Charles Krasinsky of Dubuque and fireman Man of Dubuque, with two unidentified men and a yeoman among the dead. In Washington Det 11 Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Tokes announced Ralph Horween of Chicago as executive assistant of the oil administration.

Feeling Against Italy Grows in Belgrade

In Belgrade on October 11 the Italian consulate attache was beaten by demonstrators as chants of Down with Italy rang out. The mob blamed Italy for King Alexander's assassination, and police intervened after the attack. Prince Paul and regents of young King Peter swore allegiance in parliament.

Corry Hospital board discussed fire regulations heating system and relief funds for repairs. Miss Ethel Cole reported September totals 460 days 13 births 16 major 19 minor operations. Treasurer Elston report filed. Bids on coal accepted from N Cohen and Sons. Relief funds and new heating system to be pursued.

Bumper corn and potato crops praised by state survey

September rainfall and temperatures in Pennsylvania boosted late crops and winter wheat prospects. Corn yield rose to 44 bushels an acre, 412 bushels above last year and 7.2 above four-year average, with no frost damage. Silage corn excellent, oats and potatoes better than expected, beans and alfalfa delayed by rain, pastures excellent, grapes and pears improving, winter apples sizing up.

Seven die in Halifax blast wrecks house

An explosion and fire leveled a three story house in Halifax M S causing seven deaths including four children. Rescue workers reported four children among the victims and many residents fled as flames spread through the neighborhood. The blast rattled nearby buildings within a half mile radius and authorities began investigations into the cause and identities of those killed.

Erie County Republican Women form local unit

A group of women met at the home of Mrs. J. J. Desmond yesterday afternoon and formed a branch of the Erie County Council of Republican Women. An invitation is extended to all registered Republican Women to join. Names may be given to Mrs. James A. Cassidy or Mrs. James MacInnes. A dinner and mass meeting with Republican candidates speaking is planned soon. Several Council members will meet Governor-elect Schnader Saturday morning at Corry for a brief informal reception before Erie luncheon at Hotel Lawrence.

Last concrete poured on Spring Creek stretch to Hyer's Crossing

The final concrete pour marks completion of 1.84 miles of Spring Creek to Hyer's Crossing road, opening in one week. Garland contract for 1.84 more miles awarded to J. Devine Construction of Meadville at 48,569 dollars, to extend toward Garland. A planned 87 foot weighteen highway and a scenic drive to Warren deepen regional connectivity. The Pinchot road north from Clymer toward the Erie county line is also advancing and expected to finish soon.

Charles Shenk Erie contractor dies at 70

Charles E Shenk 70 president of the Henry Shenk Co building contractors died at his home in Erie Pa after a stomach ailment. His firm was responsible for many large buildings in the district over the past 25 years.

Pinchot Urges Tax Reform and School Mergers in Pennsylvania

Governor Pinchot called on the legislature to act to stabilize schools in Pennsylvania outlining redistribution of real estate taxes, a graduated income tax to cut at least 10 million annually, district consolidation to save millions, lower tax collection costs, and restoring teacher salaries. He endorsed a three part recovery plan focusing on reconstruction and restoration of instruction, reorganization of districts for efficiency, and a fair, state distributed school funding base.

Southern Belle Beaten Kidnapped by Fiend in Louisville

Mrs. Berry Y. Stoll, a Southern society belle, was kidnapped from her sick bed and brutally beaten by an abductor at her Louisville mansion. The ransom demanded is 50000 dollars as private citizens and law enforcement join the search for the kidnapper, who restrained a maid and dragged Stoll away before leaving with her in a waiting car. The husband, 30, president of a local refining company, vows to pay for her safe return.

Fugitive Rambler Shot After Escape Attempt Near Bridge

Brad dock Pa Oct 11 Claire Rambler 23 a suspect in a Westmoreland county bank robbery was shot and wounded by fourteen state police and county detectives who ambushed him near the Tassey Hollow bridge as he tried to flee from Troop A at Greensburg. He was in critical condition at Brad dock hospital 24 hours after the attempt.
