In Crawfordville Georgia protesters press an anti integration campaign targeting the governor and taunting state police. About 150 gathered at the courthouse as part of larger actions tied to school integration amid dispersal of white pupils to avoid mixing. NAACP leader Charles Evers warned of resumed marches if officials ignore demands.
At the Vatican Ecumenical Council 2200 prelates debated the Jews and modern world issues. American bishops pressed for a nuclear arms morality clause while others urged blanket condemnation of all warfare. Final voting on the amended text set for next Thursday and Friday.

In Pittsburgh area 7 agents arrested 3 in Greensburg and the rest in Allegheny County. Those charged faced failing to obtain federal gambling stamps as part of nationwide IRS raids on gambling establishments.
Washington AP report describes President Johnson "feeling fine" after a major abdominal operation. He signed a bill extending the inter est balance of payments program within hours, seen by a photographer at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Doctors said the operation was routine with no malignancy.
Los Angeles police say Wayne Lee Welch, an 18 year old philosophy student, read a Camus novel in which a murder is depicted and then killed two men in a parking lot. Detective Lt Earl A Deemer says Welch admitted the idea came from the book and decided to commit murder last August 12. The victims were John M Kimball 57 and Alejandro Lopez Montez 51, workers at a trucking firm.
The Journal corrects yesterday's report on the City Recreation Committee pool project. The term Republican Committee appeared in error and should read Recreation Committee, a non political body with members chosen for qualifications.
Philadelphia police report Gerald Helder, 17, a North Catholic High student, shot himself with a loaded revolver after procuring it with Robert Dwyer, 8, from a lunchroom counter. The group of six drank wine earlier. Dwyer pulled the trigger after removing all but one shell, but the gun did not fire.
A 20 truck convoy of the U S 1st Infantry Division was ambushed by Viet Cong near Phuoc Vinh thirty miles north of Saigon. The attack left moderate casualties after an ensuing 20 minute fight. The incident marked the largest ambush of U S forces in the war to date.
A 40 foot high silo collapsed at Elverson Pennsylvania killing Abner Stoltzfus, 40, his neighbor Oliver Mast, and three children Deborah Stoltzfus, 3, Michael Mast, 11, and William Baker, 5. Moisture caused the corn to surge, smashing walls and trapping victims under a torrent of grain as fire crews and neighbors dug with shovels and bare hands.
Harrisburg AP reports a Pittsburgh attorney Edward C Spotts warned during two days of public hearings that Pennsylvania auto insurance rate hikes in effect since October 1 could ruin Gov Scranton s presidential bid and aid Democratic opponents. Spotts spoke to Insurance Commissioner Audrey Kelly representing Donald R Johnson of Pittsburgh who argues the 15 to 20 percent statewide increases are excessive. Julie Kelly defended the hikes, noting higher and more frequent claims. New hearings were scheduled after criticism grew, with advice and testimony taken as part of the ongoing process.
Wattsburg veterinarian Dr. Paul Wetzel doubts a so called gift of land for a county park three miles north of Wattsburg. He notes the land value around $4,000 and the county would gain $16,000 with no cost, while federal and state grants cover most of the purchase. The owner plans to convey the land, with the Open Space program funding $6,000 and state funds $10,000. Commissioners invited Wetzel to present his views at the October 25 recreation and park board meeting.
A head on collision two miles south of Union City on Route killed Daniel Houck 20 Smethport Pa when his southbound car crossed the center line. Melvin Rote 27 Kala mazoo Mich and William Sehmuers 40 Emlenton Pa were hurt and admitted to Union City Memorial Hospital with facial and body injuries. Rote in good condition, Sehmuers in fair. Total damage to both autos estimated at 1800 dollars.
Two brothers, 21 and 16, were held without bond on murder charges for killing their grand uncle Clair L. Heckathorn 63 near New Wilmington. Police say he died from 29 caliber heart shots at his farm home. A missing wallet and two rifles tied to the youths were noted.
The House approved a bill to provide free air mail to American troops in combat zones and to require the Defense Department to ship parallel post parcels to men in combat areas. The Pentagon objected to the parcel post provision citing higher costs and capacity strain.
