Sheriff Babbitt vows to resist loss of power
Sheriff Babbitt disclosed today his plan to resist with all his influence any encroachment on his authority as chief law officer of the county. He said he would pursue objectives of a recently adopted program by the State Sheriffs Association to restore to sheriffs many powers once delegated to them. He noted that county and state police have taken over duties once done by sheriffs, reducing their role to summons serving and prisoner transport, and argued that sheriffs have no superior in their counties and must diligently exercise their powers.
