A 10 man delegation of Western Pennsylvania business and civic leaders met with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to propose extending the toll road northeast from Petersburg Ohio to Erie. The 1963 legislature approved the Erie area extension linking west to the Ohio border and east to New York. The delegation urged the extension be laid as northeast as possible for engineering efficiency, with the route potentially starting anywhere along the western extension between Irwin and the Pennsylvania Ohio border.
