German Cruiser Sunk and Allied Progress in Europe

German cruiser reportedly sunk in the North Sea while Austria claims Russian repulses in Galicia and northern France sees continued fighting. Berlin touts bombardment progress around Antwerp as Russian pushes at Lyck and Tornewo are disputed. a German destroyer loss is reported near the North Sea with crew saved by another vessel.

French order barbed wire for Pittsburg plants

The French government ordered 500000 feet of barbed wire for battlefield entanglements. Twenty five thousand tons of steel will be needed. The Pittsburgh Steel Wire Company and Sharon Hoop Company in Sharon will produce the wire.

London firm orders fur overcoats for army and navy

An army and navy supply house in London asks Berliner Hide and Fur Company for a large bid on knee length fur overcoats for the English forces for the coming winter. Some coats must be very cheap while officers require slightly better quality. Leather coats are also requested. The local firm has cabled a bill and hopes to win the contract. The obituary for Mrs. Whitely notes she died Sunday at Spring Crevice. funeral held at her daughter's home in Stearns town with Alexander and Company in charge.

World Series ticket sale opens in Philadelphia crowd

At nine this morning the first World Series tickets went on sale in Philadelphia. Joe Banks purchased the first pass while Lye Young Woman and another Philadelphian were allowed to buy early. About five thousand people lined up, most fans with scalpers among them, with top seats priced around five dollars and front rows offered for a quarter.

Troops to Winter in Colorado

Washington October 7 Secretary of War Garrison announced orders to U S troops in Colorado to buy lumber for winter shelters. He said withdrawal by President Wilson or continued stay all winter is possible, and the orders are precautionary.

Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Meet Set Here October 18

Notice announces the Fourth Degree Assembly of the Third District Knights of Columbus to be held in the local council headquarters on Sunday October 18. About forty delegates are expected to attend to transact important business including rotations and dates for Fourth Degree exemplification to be decided and announced later.

Mayor Orders Sidewalk Food Displays Moved

Mayor Patterson ordered enforcement of the municipal ruling on curbside displays of groceries and fruits. Several North Center street stores agreed to relocate their outside displays, and the change took effect immediately.

Berlin Announces Fall Of Two Antwerp Forts

Berlin via The Hague reports Forts Kessel and Brochem guarding Antwerp have surrendered to German forces after bombardment by siege guns. The walls were breached and garrisons surrendered. Antwerp’s capture is expected within days.

McCormick to Visit Corry for Washington Party Speech

Democratic Washington Party gubernatorial candidate McCormick will be in Corry on October 16 with Lewis, former candidate, at Library Theater at nine. They plan tours to Titusville, Oil City, Franklin, Cochranton, Conneaut, Linesville, and Meadville. details to follow. Also noted is a Missionary Alliance project in North Corry with moving the old church to a new site on Columbus Avenue and a complete restoration including a concrete foundation and veneer.
