Jamestown Negligence Suit Upholds City in 350000 Case
The Appellate Division in Rochester unanimously upheld a lower court ruling against Jamestown in a 350000 negligence suit arising from a February 1954 bus accident. Mary Joy and husband Harry Joy filed suit April 1954 after Mrs Joy, struck near North Main and West Second streets, lost both legs. Officer Carlson was named among defendants for directing traffic. The decision, handed down May 16 by Justice George Vandermeulen, refused dismissal, stating an affirmative act by Carlson could make the city liable. The city may appeal to the State Court of Appeals in Albany with special permission.

Crisis Near On Aid To Schools
Harrisburg reports an approaching crisis over school aid. Senate Republicans plan a caucus to decide how to cover October and November deficiencies, including a 10 million dollar shortfall for state aid to schools. Debates center on charging the liability to Mercer Fine or the Democratic administration. A companion 6.717 million dollar deficiency is set to cover state rentals for authority financed school construction as districts fear further cuts. A Pittsburgh meeting is planned to form a legislative committee to probe reports of brutality at the Morganza Training School.
