Blessing and cursing hunters during St Francis Day
In Upper Darby Pennsylvania Reverend Frederick Powers of St Giles Episcopal Church plans a blessing of animals on St Francis Day as fall hunting opens. He fears hunting as sport corrupts and prays that weapons and traps be cursed to protect wildlife and hunters. The service aims to convert hunters and mirrors Catholic St Francis Day traditions gaining Protestant appeal. The curse targets hunting gear of about 1.25 million Pennsylvania license holders on five million acres of public land. The general season began September 1.
