Officials Plan Blanket Cut In Nondefense Spending

Washington federal officials warn a $5 billion blanket cut in nondefense spending would disrupt orderly government and provoke home backlash against lawmakers demanding tax increases. The plan would eliminate new contracts on major federal construction, halt all new projects, cut loans 50 percent, trim grants to states and localities by one third, and drastically reduce or eliminate the school lunch program. If enacted, cuts would come from about $20 billion controllable by the administration, excluding military and debt interest.
