The Meadville VA office shut Saturday due to visitors becoming insufficient to justify operations. George Barns will move to New Castle as office manager, with Meadville area veterans to contact the Erie office for services. The report also notes a rise in Christmas Seal donations totaling 23,238,148 dollars nationwide.
Beverly Hills based cartoonist Milt Gross author of That's My Pop died at sea aboard the liner Hiner Lurline while returning from a two week vacation in Hewali. Jerrold Gross, his son, said his father suffered a heart attack aboard the vessel.
JOHNSTOWN Pa a mother and her two daughters died in a fire that destroyed their frame bungalow in Benshoff Hills. Victims were Mrs Frank Berg 40 Diana 13 and Sharon 6. Father Frank Berg 97 and son Jack 15 were burned. Berg in fair condition Jack serious. Robert 7 and brother in law and wife escaped. Fire chief cites overheated stove or short circuit as possible cause. Berg said he was awakened by the blaze.
A car driven by Harold Lenhart 23 and Gerald Case 21 plunged into French Creek on a weekend pass from Ft. Dix New Jersey. Four soldiers from Erie age 20 to 23 were injured. Case 21 the driver is in critical condition with Lenhart and Janulewski listed in critical or serious condition. Franklin police rescued the victims from about four feet of water as the car burned and fumes hindered rescue attempts.
Miss Houghtling 99 of East Washington street returns to Corry after training at the International Guiding Eye School in North Hollywood. She and Autumn Blakely each received seeing eye dogs funded by the Corry Jamestown Union and local donors. The cost of care is about $18 per month, with hopes for local underwriting.
