Weinberger May Use Ax To Trim HEW Budget
Washington AP report says Caspar Weinberger, nominated as secretary of Health Education and Welfare, will pursue aggressive spending cuts. He directed OMB and could push a ten thousand cut in HEW payroll, aiming to curb a department with a 78.9 billion dollar budget, about a third of federal outlays. Weinberger plans reforms, while undersecretary Veneman, a trusted ally, may help with congressional relations. He faces scrutiny over cutting Great Society programs while preserving welfare and health programs. The 1974 budget is near completion and will reflect the trimmed approach.
