Proposed Law Would Hit Area Wage Tax Plans

ERIN-File residents who work in General Electric Co would escape paying the one per cent income tax under a resolution approved by the northwest regional council of the Pennsylvania League of Cities and approved by the General Assembly. The measure would let communities collecting the tax retain it while refunds to nonresidents shift. A detailed analysis by John Hart, head of the city school board, estimates the city would gain $59,250 if approved, but Millcreek would lose $218,000 this year as taxes collected by the city for Millcreek residents would be refunded. Lawrence Park and other communities face shifts as non residents are spared and school districts cannot tax nonresidents. GE receipts of about $250,000 yearly would be lost by the city, offset by gains in Fairview, Greene, Harborcreek, Lawrence Park, Millcreek, Summit, Wesleyville, and others totaling substantial sums.
