Venango County Slayer Sentenced to 10 to 20 Years
Franklin November 25 Judge Lee A. McCracken sentenced Harry Dragan to not less than 10 years and not more than 20 years in the Western Penitentiary for the October 10 life slaying of 38 year old William G. Hawke Scrubgrass Township farmer. Dragan convicted of second degree murder by a seven to five jury, fined $100 and costs. He read a prepared plea claiming self defense and home protection as he stood with shackled hands.

October farm income shows sharp increase nationwide
Farmers in the vicinity saw higher cash income in October with the Agriculture Department reporting $1,125,000,000 from crop marketings and government payments. The month’s marketings totaled $1,089,000,000 and government payments $76,000,000, trailing September but up from October 1939.

Death claims aged Corry resident Stella Root
Mrs Stella Mackres Root of 124 Prinklin Street died this morning just before ten at Comy hospital after a several days illness. Born February 6 1851 in Clymet N.Y she was daughter of the late Dr and Mrs Muckres and sister of the late James Muckres. She moved to Corry after marriage July 30 1872 and later lived in Kinsman Ohio Chambers Ariz and Minneapolis. Survived by three sons seven grandchildren three great grandchildren and had been widowed for years. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
