Move to Quash Mayville Case

Jamestown November 25 The first move in efforts to dismiss the indictment against Mrs Morence Burch 38 year old Mayville woman charged with attempted murder was made yesterday at 2 o clock by her attorney Harry M Young of Mayville who moved before County Judge Lee L Oltaway to inspect grand jury minutes. Mrs Burch formerly a deputy county clerk but dismissed last January is accused of sending a box of poisoned candy to Miss Fern Karges index clerk at the Mayville courthouse. A chemical exam showed arsenic in the candy sufficient to poison several persons. A Problem A Day Cake Box Riddle

A riddle asks how many cakes were in a box initially. Steps describe fractions taken and given along a chain: a man takes one third, gives one fifth of the remainder to his pay, who gives two eighths to his sister, who has received two cakes. The solution requires backtracking from the sister receiving two cakes to determine the original total. The text also notes an answer from yesterday and a separate arithmetic fragment about converting feet to inches and multiplying 168 by 3.
