Tragic Domestic Tragedy Rocks FASTON Area

A June night horror in FASTON leaves Jim Mantoni dead after an ax attack that killed his wife Anna, granddaughter Blaine, and left two grandchildren with brain injuries. Mantoni, a crane operator, then killed himself near a warehouse after leaving a note asking forgiveness. Neighbors described a desperate family crisis as police opened a murder suicide investigation.

Council Hits Commercial Christmas Keep Christ in Christmas plan moves forward

The Avon council and Me Corry Avenue Council of Churches approved buying letters for a Keep Christ in Christmas display and arranged a three-tee sign at a prominent city spot once approved. They back limiting Sunday retail operations to curb commercializing the season and will pilot Mind-A-Prayer, a six month service letting ministers’ brief prayers play for callers. Authorities plan to place the system at the YMCA, honor the Chamber of Commerce for weekday city tree lights, and review UNICEF collections from Halloween.

Corry Area Board Approves Preliminary Teacher Pay Plan

Corry area committee grants initial approval to a teacher pay program funded partly from existing rent budget items. The plan raises salaries beyond state maximum for some, with a one day contract and a $11,000 upfront cost to be included in next year’s budget. Additional provisions cover long service, study incentives, substitute pay, and 185 day contract, contingent on joint board approval.

Train Car Crash Kills Mother and Injures Husband

A mother of ten, Mrs Dorothy Jenkins, 47, was killed when an eastbound freight train collided with a car at a Ripley railroad crossing. Her husband William Jenkins, 49, suffered minor injuries and was treated, then released. Coroner Theodore Morse ruled accidental death. Train crew from Buffalo gave statements and continued.

Multiple Coin Pinball Machines Ruled Illegal By Court

Pennsylvania's Supreme Court ruled 6-1 today that multiple coin pinball machines are illegal gambling devices. The ruling, upholding a 1957 seizure of 17 machines in Fayette County, could lead to immediate statewide seizure of similar machines worth about 20 million dollars. Justice Musmanno dissented, arguing pinball is amusement rather than gambling.

Area Highways Workers Suspended Over Political Activity

Meadville Pennsylvania two county maintenance workers for the state Department of Highways were suspended for alleged political activity. Clarence Kramer Springboro and Edison Locke Hartstown were notified by county superintendent Arthur Fish that their duties are suspended indefinitely pending official authorization from Harrisburg. The suspensions recall a 1958 incident when Harold Turner was removed for political actions. current officials say the case remains unsettled with possible resignation or further local action.

Mother Kills 4 Children in Georgia Tragedy

In Hossville Georgia a 1 year old mother confessed to beating her four children to death with a hammer. Deputies found three boys ages 5 18 months and a two month old girl dead at Wiley M Thrailkill Sr home. Four In Family Killed In Crash

A station wagon truck collision late yesterday killed four members of a Mesa family. Driver Felix Rodriguez, 31, was critically injured. The dead include his wife Mary 29 and their son Felix Jr five months, plus two children from Mrs Mesi-Rickman s previous marriage Mon te Ramirez 6 and 9 year old 3 well as children from a previous marriage of Mrs. Mesi-Rickman.

Woman Tells Of Role In Escape Of Five Convicts

Mrs Edd Sheets recalls her brief, unwilling role in the Ashe County prison escape. While alone with her sick daughter, she watched the convict truck pass and later saw five inmates seize guard William Handy, disarm him, and force guards Judd Jones and Handy into the truck. The escape left seven nonparticipants urging the felons, and an associate mortally wounded. Police later charged a suspect in a separate hit and run death in Butler, Pennsylvania.
