The Pennsylvania Supreme Court today upheld the life sentence of James J. Westwood for the 1985 slaying of his wife Martha Westwood in Pittsburgh. Westwood, a former small-business figure and Republican activist, was convicted after a sensational trial in which prosecutors depicted him fleeing his home and shooting Martha as she slept. The ruling rejects defense claims of travel timing and raises questions about witness threats and related investigations.

Jamey Bowzell, 40, of R D 3 Clymer, was hospitalized at Corry early today after an accident at a gravel pit on Oris Gravinic Road. He sustained chest and leg injuries, with X rays taken to assess damage. attendants believed he escaped serious harm. He apparently became trapped in a cave at the site.

Nanticoke residents recall a tragedy at Boyle's Pond as brothers Charles 17, Joseph 12, and John 8 slipped through inch thick ice while skating with Theodore 9 nearby. Spectators heard screams. only Theodore survived, crawling ashore after the ice broke beneath them.

Governor George Earle was aboard a plane piloted by Richard Ferrhyne when it encountered a heavy snowstorm near Altoona. The craft plunged about 160 feet before the pilot recovered control. Earle reported striking his head and being knocked unconscious briefly before regaining alertness.

Ashton is brother to former pastor Mortimer S. Ashton of Emmanuel Episcopal, now at New Brighton. The Brandywine Creek parish is small with about 100 communicants and the church sits in Delaware’s rolling villa area. the building dates to twenty years after the 1856 origins.

Local patrol reports three separate crashes in district three yesterday afternoon. Elizabeth Sample of Erie sustained injuries in a two car collision on Route 6 near Ampnity. The injured include Mel Denest Dahlberg and 2 year old Robert from West Twelfth Street area. Corporal Carlson investigated. In another crash on Route 6 near Ampnity, Elizabeth Sample sustained injuries. Wallace Baron and J W Hog an involved. injuries described as minor. A third collision on Route 8 west of Union City between Vivian Halley of Youngstown and Donald Cross of Union City caused badly damaged cars but no injuries. Patrolman Blythe investigated.
The State Supreme Court today upheld the murder convictions of Joseph J. Bruno and five relatives in the Kelayres massacre. Five unarmed men were killed and about 20 others wounded during a local political disturbance that grew to violence.
