Des Moines Iowa governor William Beardsley died from chest injuries after his car rear ended a pickup on State Highway 60 six miles north of Des Moines. The 53 year old Republican, a DW Eisenhower supporter, was to complete a third term. Mrs Beardsley and two passengers in the pickup were hospitalized with injuries.
Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Vishinsky died today from a heart attack. Dr. Erloo N. Van Kleffens announced the death at the United Nations General Assembly as delegates expressed sympathy and meetings adjourned in respect to the Soviet diplomat. Vishinsky would have turned 61 next month.
Washington officials report the Soviet government has concluded a policy reappraisal and decided against paying a high price in concessions or threats to block Western rearming of West Germany. The Kremlin may favor German rearmament to avoid unification on Western terms and to avoid risking military action against the West. Ambassador Bohren heads to Washington for talks with Eisenhower and Dulles. Dulles and Mendes-France urge early ratification of West German defense treaties and warn against delaying talks or turning to propaganda. Police investigate thefts of checks valued at 3600 and 600 from William Bonts operator of Wattsburg Lumber Company over the weekend. He reported the checks, which he had stopped payment on, were taken from his home. Police say no definite suspect, but youths are suspected.
