Alamogordo New Mexico AP space jockey Joe Wittinger remains unruffled after a 15 mile parachute jump from a balloon at 78400 feet above White Sands missile range. He freefell at about 450 miles per hour for three minutes, then a parachute opened and he drifted to the desert in six more minutes. Wittinger, an art jockey turned space age experimenter, says he kept the ascent and altitude in mind with physiological notes, aiming to gather data for emergency space operations.

Titusville Man Dies in Truck Cab Crisis
Kenneth Stearns, 44 of Hydetown, reportedly committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in the cab of his pickup truck in Hydetown. Deputy Coroner Dr. C. M. Sonne said the death occurred about 7 p m and the truck was being used as a barn, near the Stearns home across from the Hazel Sullivan property. Alice Stearns found him after going to search for him. Titusville Fire Department responders attempted revival but were unsuccessful.

BAY SHORE New York AP five members of a family were burned to death when a flash fire swept their two story home in Suffolk County Long Island. The only survivor William Mayo 25 woke others after discovering the blaze on the first floor at about 3 am. He jumped to the ground from the window and urged his family to jump to the roof. The roof began to collapse trapping the occupants as the stairs and home burned.
