Mill County to Seek Tax Increase to Cover Budget Deficit

Erie report states Institution District faces deficit prompting a proposed two to three mill hike. District head P Barton Kaufman told county commissioners that the district’s 10 year cash surplus will drop toward $20,000 as 1947 expenses reduce the fund by about $75,000. He cites rising living costs and higher salaries plus 60 more dependent children to be cared for, now totaling 461 at a monthly cost of $10,000. With seven mills currently in the county rate, 1 mill funds the Institution District, leaving an estimated 2 to 2.5 mills needed for the new coverage.
