Amnesty report cites Soviet prison abuse driving prisoners to suicide
Amnesty International says 10,000 of about 1 million Soviet prisoners are political or religious prisoners. The 150 page study based on official data, prisoners, families, and underground writings describes hunger, dangerous work, beatings, abusive drugs, and suicides like Opanasenko who hanged himself in 1974. Soviet officials call the report a vulgar falsification.
