Author Harvey O'Connor Fined for Refusing to Say He Is Communist
Harvard author Harvey O'Connor was fined 500 dollars and given a one year suspended jail term for contempt of Congress after refusing to answer Senator McCarthy whether he was a member of the Communist conspiracy while writing books used abroad by U S Information Service. O'Connor said he believed the First Amendment protected his speech and press rights and spoke more during the hearing than his attorney. He claimed he did not know his books were used in overseas libraries and compared his situation to an innocent bystander caught in a brawl between McCarthy and the State Department.
