USDA to Buy Concord Grape Juice for National Lunch Program
Congress member Joseph P. Vigorito announced the USDA will purchase 317,400 cases of Concord type grape juice for the national school lunch program. About half the juice comes from growers in northwestern Pennsylvania and western New York with Keystone Grape Association and Welch Grape Juice Co. among the low bidders. Other bidders include Sommers Foods Inc, Redwing Co, and Seneca Foods Corp. The purchase aims to assure equitable returns for this year's harvest and may expand to other government food programs.

Erie Officials Lament HUD Model Cities Rejection
Erie city leaders react to HUD excluding Erie from the first round of Model Cities planning grants. Mayor Louis J. Tullio says the city should have been chosen as the third largest in Pennsylvania, while Model Cities Administrator Alex R. Pelinsky notes applicants were judged on prior area work. Erie will pursue planning with state and private funds and hopes to be in the second round with $12 million available and 63 cities total in consideration.
