Nixon Approves Alaska Pipeline Amid Environmental Delays
President Nixon signed the Alaska pipeline bill clearing the way for 789 mile route from the Arctic to start work next year on a 4.5 billion project. The plan would deliver 600000 barrels per day at first, rising to 2 million, potentially meeting about 81 percent of U.S. petroleum needs. Nixon noted a few “clinkers” but said energy needs outweighed concerns amid lawsuits and regulatory issues.
