Boy Scout Log Notes Progress of Troop 82 and Gary Church Unit
The First Presbyterian Church of Gary Scout program began with four boys under Scoutmaster W. C. Pomeroy. In December 1939 eight tenderfoot scouts qualified and charter was requested. By March 1940 the charter was presented and investments held in a church ceremony. The troop formed a committee led by Ellsworth W. Holt with aides A. Brhve Smith, Harold Sweet, Harold G. Wolfe, Allan M. Spencer, Ross Fehlman, Rev. Gilbert L. Boyd, Porter Auer and Robert W. Whittier. New members joined, a new patrol formed, and the program progressed with summer camping at Camp Sequoyah and Brokenstraw Park. Advancements in the fall included eight first class, nine second class, and seven merit badges awarded at a Court of Honor on October 8, 1940. George Curtis joined as assistant scoutmaster, aiding training. The troop planned sea scout ambitions, a push to admit teens into advanced programs, and welcomed Troop 70’s new commissioner. New members John Dempsey and others joined, and the group noted casual social activities such as a Halloween party. The record mentions promising fundraising, a plan for a Junior High event, and welcome to two new scouts at Troop 70, Heya Lines and Sonny Carlson. The report closes with notes of a no-scene room project and improving attendance at Troop 82.
