U S Navy crewmen toured Sasebo without incident after Japanese riot police dispersed a leftist sit down protest. About 2 000 demonstrators marched near the naval base as the nuclear powered Sea Dragon arrived for a brief recreational visit amid political tensions and safety checks.
Prague Czechoslovakia AP The National Assembly re elected Communist party chief Antonin Novotny as president of Czechoslovakia He is 60 and has held both top offices since 1957 His re election was seen by some Vienna observers as showing independence from Moscow as it did not follow the pattern of separating party and government posts The vote had 294 of 800 assembly members present with all voting for Novotny and one member opposing Novotny 43 years in the Communist party he remains a Stalinist ally of Khrushchev who backed him weakly in the process
Secretary of State Dean Rusk warns of serious trouble in Southeast Asia if Communist interference continues. He says the United States intends to pull back and let Southeast Asia chart its own course, as reported in an interview for CBS television.
In El Cajon California surgeons quoted a 30 to 50 percent chance of success for a procedure to recover a four year old girl's lip from a Labrador's stomach and sew it back onto her face. The girl from Spring Valley touched the dog while it ate and the lip was severed. The dog was destroyed to recover the tissue and sterilized before implantation.
A pony on Route 5 north of Centerville was struck and killed by a 24 year old Meadville driver Connell Henky on Route 8. Damage to his car estimated at 250 dollars. Other accidents on Route 8 near Union City and Route 77 near Spar tansburg caused minor damage with no injuries. An angler, Jick H Coffey of Noblestown, drowned after falling from a canoe on the Allegheny River near Kittanning.
UKEWE England AP Gordon Ignatewicz a Canadian car aficionado found a scratch on his new Rolls Royce. He shipped it from Toronto to Rolls headquarters in London with a sharp complaint. The firm sent a replacement across the Atlantic by mail. A spokesman said the gesture couldn’t be made for everyone but Gordon was singled out.

A Crawford County man, Robert F.E. Brown, 45, of R D 1 Linesville, was killed when his car struck a utility pole and a large rock on a rural road about five miles west of Meadville. State Police said Brown, who was alone, was traveling at high speed and was thrown from the car.
A Beltish cargo pilot, Wazimierz Fraser, 40, landed a jet at Kennedy Airport with four passengers from England then collapsed in the cockpit and died. Fraser, once a Royal Air Force fighter, served with the Polish army in exile, and colleagues administered oxygen while medical help arrived.
