Board weighs wartime pay for soldiers staff
Superintendent Ralph S. Dewey told the Board of Education that the 1917 act requiring 50 to 60 percent wage continuation for employees entering military service applies to state, county and city workers as well as school staff. The law charges the district with arranging substitutes while dependents receive the benefit, with the 50 percent to dependents. Officials await a binding opinion on its applicability to the current emergency, and Dewey expects few district employees to be affected as eligible lists are thinning.

School News at Columbus Highlights Busy Week
The Hi boys hosted a game supper for the girls on Monday November 4 with about sixty in attendance. An interfating speech by B C Reneau and musical selections by Lyle Thompson capped the evening as boys’ mothers prepared the supper. In sports, two football teams coached by Edward Zamboric and James Hammond played Thursday afternoon in Health class, Hammond’s team winning 6 100. Freshman class members built book ends and trays from odds and ends of wood, while many boys hunted on opening day bagging rabbits and squirrels. The new grade school adjacent to the high school progresses rapidly. The Arlington cemetery address by President Sweet inspired the students, and the Armistice Day service in the Junior and Senior rooms featured scripture, Lincoln selections, and a moment of silence. The BD A meets tonight at eight with parents urged to attend.
