La Follette Considered to Direct Europe Aid Plan
Washington reports place Robert M. La Follette Jr as a leading candidate to head a projected multi billion dollar European aid program. The question is whether the Marshall plan is run by a new independent agency or directly by the State Department. The Harriman committee favors the agency with broad powers to decide on dollar use and food or fuel grants to counter Communist expansion. The plan would spend about 5.75 billion dollars in the first year, including over 2 billion in grants.
